The U.S. Latin music business experienced its second year of double-digit growth in 2018. The Latin market grew 18% in 2018 to $413 million, driven by a nearly 50% growth in revenues from paid subscriptions. As RIAA COO Michele Ballantyne states in this year’s report (below), “Any conversation about the Latin music market starts with one word: streaming.” Streaming formats made up a remarkable 93% of total Latin music revenues, compared with 75% for the overall U.S. music market.

Halfway through 2018, the United States music business “continues its comeback story, powered by great new music, talented artists and a re-invented record industry.” Overall market trends in the first half of 2018 continued to reflect the music industry’s rapid transition from unit based physical and digital sales towards streaming music sources. Total revenues from recorded music in the United States grew 10% to $4.6 billion at retail in 1H 2018. Streaming music accounted for ¾ of industry revenues. At wholesale value, revenues rose 10% to $ 3.1 billion.

Spring is a great time for data!  In March we posted our year-end U.S. revenue figures, and in April we shared data on U.S. Latin music consumption, as well as a new report from Economists Incorporated’s Stephen Siwek that outlined the important contribution music makes to the U.S. economy in both jobs and value added. Those reports help explain how the music industry is doing today and what that means for the broader economy.

But the music industry’s digital transformation does not just affect the business side – it’s driven by fans, and the way they listen, purchase and enjoy music.  To complement those recent releases, we’re very happy to share new music consumer profile information from research firm MusicWatch, provided by Managing Partner Russ Crupnick.  This data helps give a sense of the many types of music fans and listeners. It shows what kinds of fans might still prefer physical goods like CDs or vinyl records, who likes to download or prefers to stream, and even information on some who continue to use unauthorized methods like stream-ripping rather than using the many (many!) great legal ways now available to enjoy music.

This report offers the latest taste of what industry analysts and fans want to know about music consumers.  Similar to our other reports, we hope this is a helpful start to understanding a complex and rapidly evolving music market.

The outsized role music plays in the cultural landscape of the United States is undeniable, from artists known the world over, to fans that bond over their favorite albums, to songs from our teenage years that we can still sing today. But music’s impact goes further than that.  Artists, producers, songwriters, tour managers, music teachers, and so many others get to combine their passions with their livelihood by working in the music industry.  We asked the question “how many?” – and a new study we commissioned begins to answer that question.

Inspired by reports that look at the impact of music on the economies of specific cities like Nashville and New York, we engaged the help of Stephen Siwek from Economists Incorporated, an expert on determining the economic impact of intellectual property. With data from government and other outside sources, he analyzed the broad range of businesses that comprise the modern music industry.  Everything from musicians to record labels, radio stations to digital music platforms, music teachers to instrument makers, and many more.  None of those businesses or their employees work in a vacuum, so the report also looks at the downstream effects of the music industry – the economic impact beyond the direct sales, salaries and products sold.

As steadfast believers in the power of music, even we were impressed by the breadth and impact of the music economy shown by this study.  The results are presented here, both in summarized form as well as the essential details of the analysis. This report is not the endpoint – the industry has evolved rapidly in the digital era, and is sure to continue to change.

2017 was the year that Latin music filled our playlists and dominated the airwaves like never before. Revenues from Latin music in the United States grew 37% to $243 million. More than any other genre, the growth in streaming is powering Latin music’s resurgence, accounting for 84% of Latin music revenues, while paid subscription streams now comprise nearly half of total Latin streaming revenues. But not all streaming is created equal: with lower payouts to music creators, on-demand ad-supported streams represent a higher percentage of Latin music than the overall U.S. music market, further exposing the industry’s value gap.

For more details on the U.S. Latin music market, please see additional context here from RIAA’s Josh Friedlander and Matthew Bass.

In 2017 revenues from recorded music in the United States increased 16.5% at estimated retail value to $8.7 billion, continuing the growth from the previous year. At wholesale, revenues grew 12.6% to $5.9 billion. These increases were driven by more than 35 million paid subscriptions, a 56% growth year-over-year. This is the first time since 1999 that U.S. music revenues grew materially for two years in a row, while gaps in core rights continue to distort the marketplace and deprive recording artists and songwriters of the royalties they deserve.
